Dr D Sengupta did his PhD from CDRI, Lucknow in1971 on Chemotherapy of Cancer. He thereafter joined Union Carbide Research centre Bhopal to develop technologies on Carbaryl, Aldicarb and UC 300045 out of which first two were taken up for worldwide promotion. He was responsible for setting up the first residue laboratory in the country. He joined MIT as post-doctoral fellow to work on analogs of 2Keto2deoxyD ribose the binding sugar causing acute poisoning due to Clotredium Perfrigens type of bacteria. The research led to two drugs for the control of infection. Dr Sengupta then joined School of Chemistry Georgia Institute of Technology as Du Pont visiting fellow to teach and do research on carbanion chemistry. He returned to India in 1982 to join CDRI as scientist to head the synthetic antibiotics group where he was responsible for developing and transferring technologies of Amoxycillin, Cephelexin and other similar molecules to industry. Dr Sengupta joined HIL R&D centre at Gurgaon as R&D manager to develop technologies for different pesticides which were transferred to plant. Thereafter he worked for several industries i.e. Dhanuka Researsch Center, JK Industries, EID Parry and Bheelwara group in senior positions to develop pesticide technologies noteworthy amongst them were Butachlo, Monocrotophos, Phosphamidon, Dicofol, Carboxin, Oxycarboxin, Ethion, Phorate, Endosulfan, Quinalphos, Atrazine, Simazine, Palcobutrazole, Maneb, Zineb, Mancozeb etc. Most outstanding contribution was the setting up of Parry Technology Centre and setting up of 1000 mt export oriented facility in Shanghai. In 1996, Dr Sengupta joined Institute of Pesticide Formulation Technology as Director and responsible for setting up the new research centre to develop new generation formulations and to generate their efficacy in the field. The formulations developed were well taken by the industry especially the multinationals. As Director he was also coordinating with six centres in the Asia Pacific Region under the ongoing RENPAP Program and also coordinating the Chemical Weapons Program. After retiring in 1998, Dr Sengupta joined Confederation of Indian Industry as senior advisor to oversee the Life Science Group.
